How do we have time with God? S.H.A.P.E is a great, simple guide that CityLights uses. One of the reasons that we appreciate this simple guide is the emphasis on hearing from God. God by his Spirit, though his word the Bible speaks to us. We want to move from simply gaining information to having interaction.
WHAT IS S.H.A.P.E?
SHAPE is a guide for having a time of connection and interaction with God.
Start a Bible reading plan (i.e reading a few chapters of Matthew each day). Begin your time with God by reading his Word and asking him to speak.
Hearing (& journaling):
As you read, see what grabs your attention and then ask God to speak to you and ask him questions. “Why did that verse stand out?” “What do you want to say to me through your word today?”
Journal out what you sense God is saying to you personally through your time of reading and reflection. It can be helpful to write in light of God personally speaking. Write what you sense God is saying. It is encouraged to start with the phrase “My child whom I love.” For example, after reading John 3, one could find that the famous John 3:16 grabs their attention. They ask God questions and sense and write out the following:
“My child whom I love, I want to remind you of the reality of my love today. I do love you (Jn. 3:16). This verse can get overlooked but I want you to know my love today, that is why this verse stood out to you. I also want to use you to show my love to others because I love “the world” (Jn. 3:16).
What is an action step? What would God have you do in response to what he has spoken to you? It can be good to ask God what he wants you to do. At times, it may be beneficial to have a dialogue with God and write it out. For example:
Me: what do you want me to do in light of your love today?
G: Relax. You have nothing to prove. You can rest in my love. Rejoice in my love.
Me: Anything else? (wait. listen. maybe something or someone comes to mind).
Spend some time talking with God about whatever is on your heart. Pray cheapcialisoriginal for friends, family, our city.
Give God praise and thank him for his love and how he is always with us.
